Argelia is named after its municipality in the southwest of Cauca, Colombia. This area has faced challenges due to civil unrest and the illegal drug trade for many years. This is still a pertinent problem for the families living here and many of them seek legal avenues to where they can support their livelihoods and communities.
Enter Siruma Coffee, a small female-led specialty exporter, who launched a project to support small associations incorporating about 220 families who grow coffee for their livelihood. The farmers from these associations all have small 1-ha farms and have a mix of varieties including Typica, Tabi, Caturra, Castillo, and Colombia. As well as producing coffee they are also able to use the land to produce small amounts of food for consumption including bananas, avocados, and oranges. Some of which they can sell to also generate extra income.
Siruma has been providing technical assistance on the ground by helping to provide educational sessions on pre and post-harvest techniques. Training in sensory analysis of the coffees, how their own coffees taste, and the impact of processing on quality. Additionally, providing channels in which these producers can sell through commercial specialty channels, to generate a higher income.
